Frequently Asked Questions
About the Atlas, the tools, and the occasional six-yard mystery.
What exactly is The Saree Atlas?
An independent guide to India's extraordinary saree traditions, from weaving techniques and regional histories to the questions worth asking before you buy.
It began with one bewildered husband asking rather too many questions in a saree showroom. The curiosity got out of hand. The result is an Atlas for everyone.
Who is it for?
Anyone who loves sarees, wants to understand them better, or has ever stood at a showroom counter wondering why two apparently similar pieces have such different prices.
Beginners are welcome. Experienced collectors should find plenty to explore. And bewildered shopping companions have a place here too.
Is everything free?
Yes. The Atlas is a personal, independent, noncommercial project. There are no subscriptions, advertisements, affiliate commissions or paid placements.
You are free to explore every guide and use every tool. Curiosity doesn't need a checkout page.
Can I buy sarees through the Atlas?
No. We don't sell sarees or process orders.
We do feature selected retailers and links to their websites. These are editorial recommendations, not endorsements of every product they sell. Prices, stock, returns and product specifications should always be confirmed directly with the seller.
How are retailers and recommendations selected?
We look at reputation, relevant textile specialisation, product information, transparency and the usefulness of a retailer to someone searching for a particular kind of saree.
Some recommendations are informed by personal shopping experience; others by independent research. No retailer pays to appear here.
A good seller is worth knowing. A good question is worth asking even there.
Are the photographs real?
The Atlas uses a mixture of photography, illustrations and AI-generated or AI-assisted imagery. Some editorial portraits incorporate the likeness of a real person with permission.
These images help explain and celebrate sarees. They should not be treated as photographic proof of a particular weave, fibre, zari composition or geographic origin.
For technical understanding, rely on the accompanying explanations and documented references, not the attractiveness of a picture.
How accurate are the saree prices?
Our prices are broad, indicative Indian retail ranges, informed by market research and publicly available listings.
The price of a saree depends on many things: fibre, workmanship, weaving technique, zari, provenance, the retailer and sometimes the sheer ambition of the piece.
A fine example may cost considerably more than the typical range. The figures are intended to help you understand the market, not predict the exact price on a showroom tag.
What happens to the sarees I save in the Wishlist, Almirah or Hall of Fame?
These are personal tools designed to keep your selections in your browser, on your device. They aren't public collections, and you don't need an Atlas account.
Your entries won't automatically follow you to another device or browser. Clearing your browser's stored data may also erase them, so keep a downloaded copy of anything important.
Can I download or share my collections and guides?
Yes. Several Atlas tools let you create personalised PDFs, from a shopping checklist or blouse-colour folio to a collection record and Hall of Fame recognition.
They're designed to be useful beyond the website, whether you're visiting a showroom, consulting your tailor or sharing a favourite collection with family.
Available sharing options depend on your device and browser.
How reliable is the information, and what if I find something wrong?
We research textile traditions using craft documentation, official sources, specialist references and independent editorial judgement wherever possible.
But saree terminology varies, traditions evolve, and retail claims aren't always straightforward. The Atlas is a guide to understanding and asking better questions, not an official authentication or certification service.
We welcome well-supported corrections, missing regional details, technical clarifications and suggestions.
Write to hello@sareeatlas.com. We'd rather correct a mistake than weave another explanation around it.
Can the Atlas tell me whether a saree is genuine?
Not conclusively. The Atlas helps you understand what to examine, what to ask and which claims need evidence. A photograph, price tag or attractive label cannot establish everything about a saree.
Silk Mark, Handloom Mark, GI information and maker documentation address different aspects of authenticity. No single one proves everything.
Use the Buyer's Field Guide and Showroom Companion to make a more informed assessment—not as certificates of authenticity.
Why do some sarees online cost much less than the prices in the Atlas?
Because the name of a saree doesn't tell you its complete specification. Fibre, handloom versus powerloom, weaving complexity, zari and workmanship can make an enormous difference.
Our approximate prices refer to the particular grade described, not necessarily the cheapest listing under that tradition's name.
A less expensive saree isn't automatically fake or inferior. It may simply be a different grade. Even an Assam Muga-labelled saree at ₹19,000 may not be directly comparable with the traditional handwoven Muga-ground examples discussed in the Atlas.
